I live in a man’s world. One reason is that I work for a large multi-national investment firm. As much as the financial firms work towards diversity, the industry is still dominated by testosterone. The other reason is that my offspring–from marriage and biological–are all boys. Of course, they all claim my wonderful husband as their father; yes another man. That leaves me outnumbered 4-1 unless you count my animals which helps my cause but I am still a minority.
There are many reasons that you are likely to cringe in my world. Last night’s game, fantasy football and bodily functions are all prime topics of discussion. There is no stopping to shop, go to the spa or visit an art gallery. Life is pretty much sports, politics and history. It is fair to say that men are far less complicated than women.
So what do men think of women? First of all, they usually have great respect for their female counterparts. Yes, I know there are many exceptions to this statement which are highlighted in our national media. My opinion is that, by and large, men appreciate the diverse opinion, insight and organization that many women can offer. They like our detail and work ethic and would generally choose to have some women on their team.
What about men? Men are no nonsense. They know what they want–and they work towards that goal. They don’t care about pleasing people as they are focused with the task on hand. If they have to apologize later, they will. They also are very straightforward. This is my favorite attribute of my male colleagues. There is no drama, no second guessing. You know exactly where you stand and what is expected of you. They are also risk takers. They can make deals on a napkin or at the golf course. They trust their gut.
Starting a business or investing money is a difficult, risky concept for anyone. Women can help their success by adopting some of the characteristics of men. Let’s skip the drama that we impose on our own gender. This can really paralyze us. We should also consider careful calculated risk. Yes, it is scary but, without risk, there is no reward. Go for it! The men are.
