How did you come up with your business idea?
I got the idea through frustration at the experience and cost of outdoor excursions while traveling. On two separate occasions, I purchased sea kayaking excursions that left me feeling like it was a waste of money instead of a fabulous experience. I wanted a way to rent the equipment I needed without having to worry about the limited time and a guided group tour. I wanted to kayak around the San Juan islands at my own pace, to stop in the cove have lunch and spend an hour playing in the sand. Since I couldn’t find a website that offered just equipment rentals, I decided to make one.
How did you find out about Aviatra?
Since this was my first experience with a new business, I wanted to learn as much as I could. Once I started considering various kick starters, Aviatra Accelerators showed up over and over. After meeting with several people at one of the events, I decided it was exactly what I needed to help me get Rugged Renter started.
What is your inspiration?
I’m inspired by the thing I fear the most, by overcoming fear I overcome myself and grow. The fear of starting a business is enough to stop people from the pursuit of a dream. I never want the fear of doing something to stop me from doing it, instead it should be a reason. It took me several years to realize that it was fear stopping me from creating this business, at that point I decided win or lose I was going to do it.
What is the most valuable thing you have gained from your experience?
The ability to be myself and not spend much time or effort on what other people think of me or my business.
How has Aviatra helped you out?
The people I’ve met in the last 9 weeks have been a vital part of launching Rugged Renter. Without Aviatra we would not be in a position to launch our website.
What was the biggest challenge you have faced starting your business?
The biggest challenge for me was taking the first step, making the decision to just do it.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
For Rugged Renter to be an international company and for me to be along for the ride.
Any advice for future Aviatras?
Keep going regardless of how impossible it may seem.
