3 Reasons You Should Become a Mentor
Summer is just getting underway, and so are bucket lists for the perfect summer. Is being a mentor on your “bucket list?” If not, it should be! We can all be mentors and mentees, depending on where we are in our personal and career journeys. We are always one step behind someone, but one step ahead of someone else. If you haven’t considered being a mentor, or need a reminder for why one does it, here are a few reasons why it’s worth making the time!
1.) It Expands Your Network
You never know about the connections another person may have. These connections may be of value to you, and often times it’s who we least expect! No need to go any further than Mark Granovetter’s theory on “The Strength of Weak Ties.” Meeting new people and being connected to a larger network can develop into customers, partnerships, and even friendships. And who doesn’t want to expand their network and make a potential friend?!
2.) It Rejuvenates Your Work
Feel like you’re in a rut? Mentoring someone can inspire new ideas and motivation. Talking with people about their business or work often gives us new perspectives on ours, and ideas are as good as currency in our work. If you need inspiration for your week, try meeting with your mentee on a Monday, or on a nice afternoon at a coffee shop. Getting out of your routine, creating margin, and communicating with another human (instead of your keyboard) might be just what you need to reach new heights in your business.
3.) Its Impact Lives Beyond You
This is a no-brainer. If you want to have a long-lasting impact, it starts with the people you interact with. You may have heard this saying from Confucious, “If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.” Think long-term and teach the next generation -it will be the most important thing you do.
